I have now found the problem for my Fedora 12 installation. Hopefully it's the 
same problem the other users have.

On a standard installation of Fedora 12/tomcat the JAVA_HOME are being 
overrided in this file  /etc/tomcat5/tomcat5.conf. Uncomment the line  
"JAVA_HOME="/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0" or set it to the correct Java version. I 
changed it to the SUN JDK, restarted tomcat and the problem was gone.

Can you confirm if this was your problem too on Ubuntu?
