Tim Donohue reopened DS-535:
----------------------------

Documentation Status: In Attachment(s) (was: Complete or Committed)
Assignee: Jeffrey Trimble (was: Mark Wood)

Apologies, Mark. We're unfortunately going to have to reopen this issue.

Both Jeff & I have some concerns about the wording here (it's almost too
specific to people installing tomcat via packagers -- we really should offer
two options here, or figure out a new "best practice" installation amongst all
the committers before changing the language entirely). Unfortunately neither
of us noticed this issue until this morning (which is another indicator of our
JIRA backlog issues). As Jeff already has too many doc changes to get in before
1.6.1, we're going to have to unfortunately push this change off till the next
release. Jeff will be reverting the changes out of the 1.6.x branch before the
1.6.1 release tomorrow.

This seems like a high priority issue for once we move over to managing the
documentation in Confluence (which I hope we can start doing almost immediatey
after the 1.6.1 release). But, as I said, I think we'll need to work on the
wording, or offer a few different install suggestions based on whether you
decided to install Tomcat from source or from an OS-specific installation
package.

> A number of new users seem to have difficulty in getting file ownership and
> permissions correct. I feel that many new users will be installing Tomcat
> (or whatever servlet container) using their OS' package manager, which will
> likely create a username for it. Our instructions to create a user 'dspace'
> and use that will then lead some to try to change the user under which Tomcat
> runs.  This is problematic.  The 'dspace' user is unnecessary and confusing;
> DSpace should use the container's account.
> A suggested patch is attached. Please discuss.
