Tim Donohue commented on DS-564:
--------------------------------
This was discussed in DSpace Developers Meeting on Aug 25 2010:
There were concerns expressed that we may not want to always escape a colon ":"
in a search. For example, you may be searching on a Title which includes a
colon, in which case escaping this character may cause you to no longer locate
that title. Should we allow for Lucene expressions in our DSpace Search Box,
or should we only allow for normal text-based searches (as most of our end
users don't even realize we have Lucene underneath)?
Full chat discussion:
[20:01] <tdonohue> Today, we're starting with DS-564
[20:01] <tdonohue> Advanced Search doesnt treat ':' properly :
http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-564
[20:03] <tdonohue> Any thoughts on DS-564 -- has anyone tried this or found to
be a problem locally? http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-564
[20:03] <mhwood> Sounds like this needs more investigation to determine just
what needs escaping.
[20:03] <richardrodgers> or indeed whether one solution fits all
[20:04] <tdonohue> Personally, I also wonder whether we should be allowing for
Lucene searches in our searchbox -- what if someone really does want to search
on ":" (and doesn't realize lucene is underneath)
[20:05] <tdonohue> Any volunteers to investigate DS-564 further? Do we just
leave open & unscheduled?
[20:05] <snail> tdonohue: have you ever heard of a user actaully doing that?
[20:06] <tdonohue> snail: actually doing what? searching on a ":"? Yea, if
there's a ":" in a title they might actually copy & paste the full title into
the searchbox
[20:06] <snail> tdonohue: point taken
[20:07] <mhwood> So the question is: should we try to let Lucene expressions
through, or just escape it all.
[20:07] <tdonohue> mhwood -- yea, that's the question -- did you have final
comments?
[20:07] <mhwood> No, just trying to make sure we are all considering the same
problem.

> If you try to search for a field (ie title) with the character ":" almost
> surely no document matches will be found because the character is passed
> literally to lucene.
> Attached is a patch to escape this character...
> Maybe other special characters should be escaped too, but i am not sure. just
> escaping ':' allows the users to use wildcards if they want to... (Doubt that
> is used is our case, but not much sure about general dspace usage)
