Tim Donohue updated DS-575:
---------------------------

Issue Type: New Feature (was: Improvement)

This was discussed in DSpace Developers Meeting on Aug 25 2010.

It was decided that the Developers need more feedback from Repository Managers.
Is this the way DSpace should work? Are there larger issues at work here --
e.g. do we need to clean up or change the Collection Homepage, or do we need a
"Next Item" type link when viewing an item so that you can quickly jump to the
next item?

Full log of discussion:
[20:15] <tdonohue> DS-575: On item pages, collection link should go to title
browse, not collection splash page http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-575
[20:17] <bollini> DS-575 -1, it is not a bug and not a general acceptable
improvement
[20:17] <tdonohue> thoughts on DS-575? Needs more discussion or examples?
[20:18] <tdonohue> I'd agree, not sure this would be generally acceptable --
needs more feeback
[20:18] <tdonohue> I could suggest this be discussed by Global Outreach
Committee, and see what they think
[20:19] <mhwood> Yeah, we need more end-user input on what is expected.
[20:19] <sandsfish> This is a common UX problem in MIT's instance. People are
confused with this on a regular basis.
[20:19] <tdonohue> DS-575 -- forward to Global Outreach Committee? Is this
really a change that would be generally acceptable?
[20:19] <PeterDietz> the improvement would need to be in what also to show on
collection page. Such as recent-items, most-downloaded-items,
discovery-matching-items
[20:20] <PeterDietz> ...just forwarding to browse-by-title would for one, not
allow admin to edit the collection page
[20:20] <tdonohue> PeterDietz -- good point, maybe the Collection page actually
needs the change

> On item pages, collection link should go to title browse, not collection
> splash page

> On item summary pages, DSpace currently places a link back to the item's
> owning collection's splash page. This can be confusing to users expecting to
> click through to all the items in the collection, especially when there is no
> collection-description text in the owning collection (quite a common
> circumstance in our instance). Users tend to think that the "recently
> submitted" list contains every item in the collection.
> Linking to the collection's title-browse page instead un-confuses these
> users, and ensures that all users will get to something relatively useful.
> Users wishing to go directly to the collection splash page can still do so
> via the breadcrumb trail at page-top.
