o  We should indeed be moving things out of the core, not into it.
   Most sufficiently large projects end up doing that, for good
   reasons.

o  We should indeed be extracting the interfaces.  It's my
   understanding that this is widely considered a best practice in
   languages like Java, and we can see why.  It requires some
   additional discipline and planning, of which most large projects
   could use a bit more.  It's time to lean back for a bit and think
   about the layering of DSpace all over again -- one should do this
   infrequently but regularly.  (That doesn't mean stopping all
   progress.)
