My experience with authentication modules is limited to just
ShibAuthentication.java, but using that module in a stack with the
simple/default PasswordAuthentication.java module, a problem comes up if a user
who should be using Shib instead self-registers via the simple/password
authentication module. This self-created ePerson record has the net effect of
disabling any authorizations that ShibAuthentication.java, or any other
authentication module, might create automatically, typically via a
getSpecialGroups method. See also DS-994 for an early foray into addressing
this issue.
