The COINS specification actually recommends using an "empty" <span>, but they
do have a warning that empty <span> tags are sometimes stripped out by default
by some HTML checkers. So, they recommend adding a comment or a space into the
<span>.

I recommend we avoid making the COINS information visible to users (either by
mouseover or by "[coin]" text), as it will not be understandable to most end
users.
So, perhaps we should just ensure it is in a <span> tag that includes a single
