Tim Donohue commented on DS-958:
--------------------------------

This ticket was discussed in the Developer Meeting on March 14, 2012.
Essentially we all feel this is a good idea, once Cocoon 3.0 has stabilized and
is no longer considered "alpha" in nature.

[20:01] <tdonohue> starting with DS-958
[20:01] <kompewter> [ https://jira.duraspace.org/browse/DS-958 ] - [#DS-958]
Port XMLUI to Cocoon 3.0 - DuraSpace JIRA
[20:02] <tdonohue> looks like this is a "placeholder" of sorts. And I'd be a
bit hesitant to move to Cocoon 3.0 until it's out of "alpha" stage (and who
knows how long that will be)
[20:02] <mhwood> Ha, I ranted on cocoon-users just last week that (according to
the cocoon site) 3.0 is *still alpha* after four years and the latest release
is still 2.2.0
[20:03] <tdonohue> did you get a response to the rant, mhwood?
[20:04] <tdonohue> Cocoon 3.0 has an "alpha warning":
http://cocoon.apache.org/3.0/alpha-warning.html
[20:04] <kompewter> [ Alpha Warning ] -
http://cocoon.apache.org/3.0/alpha-warning.html
[20:04] <mhwood> Well, it seemed to draw a bit of attention. Others were
lamenting the low uptake of 3.0 and I strongly suggested that releasing it and
updating the site would go a long way. There is interest in getting 3.0 out
into the world but I don't know how long that will take.
[20:05] <tdonohue> ok. so, I'd suggest we copy & paste these notes to Ds-958
comments for now. I'm hesitant to touch on this any further until the Cocoon
community gets closer to a 3.0 final.
[20:06] <tdonohue> Ds-958 Summary: Copy above discussion notes into ticket
comments. "On Hold" for now as Cocoon 3.0 is still "alpha".
[20:06] <mhwood> I do think that 3.0 is getting all the attention there is.
There are seemingly immortal bug reports against 2.2 *with fixes* that never
get taken up, and folks are passing around bits of lore and loose patches to
make 2.2 work.
[20:07] <mhwood> So, when there is a reasonably stable 3.0 we should strongly
consider moving to it just to get some interest in any bug reports we file.
[20:07] <tdonohue> makes perfect sense. I'd agree. (just nervous about jumping
over to something still in "alpha")
[20:08] <mhwood> Me too, I recommend against depending on 3.0 alpha.
[20:08] <hpottinger> mhwood: is there anything we can do to help the Cocoon
folks elect to release an official version 3?
[20:09] <mhwood> Dunno. I would if I could, but I don't know the inwards of
Cocoon well at all.
[20:09] <mhwood> Those who feel able to help should ask on the Cocoon lists, or
just look over the bug reports and start filing patches I guess.
[20:10] <mhwood> I got a sense that there are just not enough hands to make
rapid progress.
[20:10] <tdonohue> yea, it looks like they are still working on 3.0, based on
this: http://cocoon.apache.org/3.0/changes-report.html (so, it might be a
matter of needing "more hands" like mhwood suggests)
[20:10] <kompewter> [ Changes Report ] -
http://cocoon.apache.org/3.0/changes-report.html
[20:11] <tdonohue> (notice that there's very few developer names that appear in
that changes report -- only about 4-5 overall in recent years)
[20:11] <hpottinger> I don't have any "spare cycles" but I can at least poke
around on their site and mail list, keep an eye out for anything I can help out
with
[20:12] <tdonohue> in any case, we should probably set this ticket aside and
move on for now.

> Cocoon recently released a third alpha release of Cocoon 3. It does seem
> that, from recent dialogs, that there is some continued direction to Cocoon 3
> development, even to the case that it is being used in production in sites
> such as "codebusters" (https://codebusters.com/). This said, I think we may
> want to being our own exploration of porting the alpha for a future release
> of DSpace XMLUI. If there are any parties that are interested in this
> exploration. This JIRA task is a hanger to explore this topic and prototype
> the upgrade in.
