Hi DSpace Developers,

We wanted you to be the *first* to know that active DSpace development
has now moved to GitHub! The older SVN repository still exists, but no
future development/changes will be made to that location.

The official DSpace GitHub source code repository is located at:
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace

As of a few moments ago, SVN has been made "read-only". No more changes
can be made to SVN.

WARNING TO FOLKS WHO WERE USING "UNOFFICIAL" GITHUB REPOSITORY BEFORE
APRIL 2012 (i.e. anyone who was working in GitHub prior to this
migration): Please note that this "DSpace/DSpace" GitHub location is a
*fresh* copy of the SVN codebase. The older "unofficial" GitHub
repository has been renamed to "DSpace/DSpace-SVN-Deprecated".
Therefore, if your existing DSpace GitHub "fork" points at
"DSpace/DSpace-SVN-Deprecated", then you will need to migrate/switch
over to using the official "DSpace/DSpace" repository. This affects only
a small handful of developers. So, if you need help in making this
switch, please post your questions to the dspace-devel listserv.

Next Steps & How You Can Help!
===============================
Even though the primary DSpace source code has been migrated to GitHub,
there are a few remaining tasks to be done. We could use help from other
developers/committers in completing these final tasks:

* Additional Module Migrations: We have several other smaller
codebases/modules that are still in the process of being migrated from
SVN to GitHub. These should likely only affect DSpace Committers. They
will be migrated in the coming week or so. The status of those migration
tasks can be tracked here:
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACE/Migration+to+GitHub (If anyone
needs a specific module moved to GitHub ASAP, please get in touch.)

* Git Best Practices: We also will be working towards "best practices"
around how to do DSpace Development in Git/GitHub. This work has started
here: https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACE/Development+with+Git
(As a developer, if you have any suggestions/brainstorms or tips/tricks
you are welcome to contribute your ideas to that page or to this mailing
list.)

* Please Help Us Update Wiki Docs & Guides: We need to update any DSpace
Documentation & Guides which reference the old SVN repository,
especially the IDE instructions for Developers
(https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACE/Developer+Guidelines+and+Tools).
We could really use help in tracking down all of these changes & making
the necessary updates! If you are willing to help with any of these
updates, please feel free to jump right in and begin updating any wiki
pages you come across. If you have questions/concerns/clarifications,
post them to this list.

* Once all of the above steps are completed (especially any
Documentation updates), we will send a more formal announcement to the
rest of the DSpace Community (dspace-tech & dspace-general lists).

Any questions/comments? Just post them to this list.
