Try a search for ((author:o'neill)) at 1.8, or 3.0. It treats the apostrophe as
a separator and effectively searches for matches on 'o'. For live examples

I think this has gone unnoticed because there don't appear to be many live
installations that have upgraded to 1.8 from an earlier version. We upgraded
six installations here for various sites and only one repo administrator
noticed the difference in the search behaviour.
I agree that we don't need to do anything for 3.0.
