Hi Jason,
Thanks for the update. Any chance you'd be able to do some more thorough tests today/tomorrow? We're looking at wrapping up the 4.0 release (as much as possible) by the end of this week. So, we are down to the last moment.
Several of us would like to see this get into 4.0, but are a little hesitant until we get some more thorough tests (and it sounds like most of our active devels are busy with other 4.0 tasks).
If there's anyone else out that that is interested in helping see this make it into 4.0, please let us know. We basically just need a bit more testing here, if we can get it. This code seems like it's better than what we have currently, but we just want some verification that it doesn't seem to accidentally break anything with existing XPDF functionality.

Thumbnails generated by the xpdf media filter are pretty low quality. We should probably improve it to be of similar quality to the regular JPEG media filter.
