As we all know, when you build DSpace (mvn package) it gets built into a directory at: [src]/dspace/target/dspace-[version]-build/ Unfortunately, when using IT/infrastructure automation software (e.g. Puppet or Chef or similar), this build location can be very difficult to determine because it includes the Maven <version>. For example, what directory does "master" build into? Or even "dspace-4_x" branch? While this naming scheme has some small benefits (it reminds you of the version you are building and about to install), it complicates the ability to manage DSpace installation in a much more automated fashion. Several of us (myself, mhwood, hpottinger) had a discussion today around whether it might even be worth standardizing this directory name, so that it's something consistent and perhaps even more "meaningful". Perhaps, just simply always building a directory named: [src]/dspace/target/dspace-installer/ ("installer" is used, because in a way, Maven is building/packaging our "installer" script/files/jars. Then Ant actually performs the installation.) This seems like it'd be a rather simple change in our pom.xml files. However, as it would affect any existing "automation" processes (anyone has built) and our documentation, we obviously want to open this up for broad discussion/feedback.
