Just noting here that CNRI (who run hdl.handle.net) has contacted me about getting this resolved for DSpace 3.x and 4.x users who have a dot in their handle prefix. Unfortunately this stands in the way of those institutions upgrading to either 3.x or 4.x.
So, this fix in itself may warrant a 3.3 release, in order to backport this fix (as well as any other major bug fixes) that have gone into 4.x platform.
