"Dotting an i" here, I've checked the current code in master (see https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/blob/master/dspace-swordv2/src/main/java/org/dspace/sword2/SwordUrlManager.java#L189), and have also checked with Richard Jones, the string length check is still present in SwordUrlManager.java. I will attempt to follow Graham's suggestion above and see where that gets us.

SWORDURLManager.getDSpaceObject() calls getBaseDepositUrl() to get the base url to strip from the deposit location, in order to retrieve the handle.
