I don't have time to look at this in detail right now, but just a comment on the single-valuedness. There may be a justification for multiple values if they each are in a different language -- wasn't this one of the drivers for "proper" collection/community MD in the first place?

Many have wished for the flexibility of DSpace's *operable* metadata infrastructure, which is specific to Item, to be available in other types such as Community and Collection. Support for operable metadata should be pushed down from Item to DSpaceObject so that all DSOs can use it.
