Our first opportunity to act on this guidance is coming up, when we cut the 4.1 release on 2/28/2014. We discussed this at the developers meeting on 2/26/2014, partial transcript to follow. mhwood1: My recollection is that we decided to no longer stuff the PDF into the source kit; instead it will be released with the tar/zipballs on SourceForge. Correct? [3:01pm] hpottinger: correct: big binaries make git slow [3:02pm] mhwood1: I guess that means we need to 'git rm' the 4.0 PDF before tagging. [3:02pm] hpottinger: well... I think we can save the clean-up for another day [3:03pm] hpottinger: though, yeah, maybe we should delete it from master [3:03pm] mhwood1: It isn't a big job, we just need it done. Shipping 4.1 with 4.0 doco. might be confusing.

Several of us were talking in #dspace IRC the other day. A simple "git clone g...@github.com:DSpace/DSpace.git" is starting to seem slower and slower. I suspect the underlying problem here may be that we have some larger binary files in our Git history.
