Why cannot a group, which happens to be named as a "special" group, be granted administrative access to a Collection? The only thing that makes special groups special is that some authentication method was configured to consider them so, and thus includes them in the identity of a session which it has authenticated. The user can only use his special membership when logged in. Why does this have to be stored?

The Shibboleth-Authentication module may add authenticated users to DSpace groups. These groups are called special groups, "these are really groups but the user's membership within these groups is not recorded in the database.
