I believe I have cherrypicked the correct commit (f748263) and have pushed the 4_x branch back up to github (see https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/commit/61ceee39908d306568e46e426796f9d398bd60ab). Will close this ticket in a moment.

I tried the "Browse by" search engine, and if you list the items browsing by date and then changing the sort by value to title, the top initial letters doesn´t work.
If I want to watch the items starting with the letter "B", the list doesn´t change.
