This problem was detected in JSPUI with an Oracle Database, and the problem was that thumbnails was not displayed when Browsing items.
This was solved implementing the class org.dspace.content.dao.ItemDAOOracle
I didn't check this in XMLUI but as it is a Dspace core modification it should affects also XMLUI.
