Hi all,

The DSpace Developers are proud to announce our Release Coordinator for
the DSpace 1.7.0 release later this year.

Peter Dietz, a DSpace Committer from Ohio State University Libraries,
has volunteered to coordinate our next major release!

Essentially, the Release Coordinator's role is to help keep the release
“on track”. As DSpace is a community driven open source project,
requirements for new features are driven by the community and actual
code developments are contributed by the community. Generally, one or
more of our DSpace Committers will review community code developments,
and help make any necessary changes to ensure the code is ready for the
next release. Often, in a given release, several smaller
committer/developer "feature teams" will form around each major new
feature in order to fully test and prepare it for release. The role of
the Release Coordinator is not necessarily to help develop or test each
feature (though occasionally he/she may help). Rather, the Release
Coordinator helps to ensure that strong communication is happening
between these ad-hoc "feature teams". He/she also helps to ensure that
the release is kept on-schedule, and regular updates are provided to the
developers and community.

As previously announced, DSpace 1.7.0 will be the next major release of
the platform. The DSpace Developers have scheduled this release for
December 2010. Although exact features have yet to be finalized, many
potential 1.7.0 features are listed on our 1.7.0 Release Notes page
(http://wiki.dspace.org/confluence/display/DSPACE/DSpace+Release+1.7.0+Notes).
The 1.7.0 feature list may change in the coming months and only those
features fully completed by the cut-off date of Oct 22, 2010 will be
included in the 1.7.0 release. More information about 1.7.0 is available
on its Release Notes page.

Thanks Peter Dietz — we all look forward to the 1.7.0 release!
