Dear DSpace Community -
I wanted to make sure you all were aware of the update on DuraSpace's community
strategy/outreach function.
As you can see from the announcement below, the DuraSpace organization is
consolidating all of the community groups (Solution Communities, DSpace Global
Outreach Committee, Ambassadors, etc.) into one community group framework. The
idea is to refine the framework -- optimizing what works and sharing best
practices between groups. The hope is in doing so we can broaden the reach and
the value of the various community groups. There are also some people changes
-- Thorny Staples, my counterpart who works with the Fedora community is
leaving the DuraSpace organization and my role is broadening a bit.
So, what does this mean for the DSpace community? Not much change really. I
believe everyone agrees that the DGOC's new focus of helping with the
development process -- reviewing the JIRA new feature issues -- seems to be the
place that group can have the biggest impact / most benefit to the community.
The past accomplishments and successes of DGOC will hopefully be useful to
other DuraSpace community groups. There has also been some discussion of
expanding the DSpace Ambassador program to the Fedora community -- and
developing a similar network of Fedora Ambassadors. We will be looking for
feedback from the DSpace Ambassadors and the Fedora community to help determine
what will serve the community best.
As always, we are interested in hearing your questions / concerns / feedback.

DuraSpace Community Outreach Update
Wednesday, October 20th, 2010 2:17 pm
Written by: vhollister
In order to serve specific needs and interests within the community, the
DuraSpace organization has helped to develop and facilitate a pilot concept of
several new community groups over the past two years. The Solution Communities,
DSpace Ambassadors, the DSpace Global Outreach Committee as well as
collaborations like the Hydra Project, are examples of groups that have
provided a variety of ways for the individuals and institutions to engage with
the community. Several of these groups have accomplished a great deal since
their inception and more information is available by clicking on their links
above.
Going forward, DuraSpace will roll all the community groups under one
framework, with the goal of providing support across both the Fedora and DSpace
projects. Wikis and other infrastructure support used to facilitate the
existing and future groups will be consolidated and DuraSpace will continue to
encourage anyone to take advantage of the community group framework regardless
of what technology they use.
DuraSpace’s Director of Community Strategy and Fedora Project Lead, Thornton
Staples, will be leaving the DuraSpace organization in November for a role at
the Smithsonian Institution as the Director of Research and Scientific Data
Management in the CIO’s office. Thorny will continue his involvement with the
Fedora user community and various community groups in his new role at the
Smithsonian. Valorie Hollister will transition into a new role as DuraSpace’s
Director of Community Programs. In that role she will lead community efforts to
promote initiatives that focus on broadening the reach of the DuraSpace
community. Over the next few months she will work with the Fedora and DSpace
communities to refine the DuraSpace community group framework and will work
closely with the groups’ organizing committees and/or group members to help
promote their future activities and successes.
Technical Leads for DSpace and Fedora — Tim Donohue and Chris Wilper
respectively — will continue in their roles working with Committers on software
development as well as helping to define the technology roadmap for each
project. In addition to the project technical leads and the Director of
Community Programs, as always, the DSpace and Fedora communities will also have
many resources available to them — including the mailing lists, wikis, project
websites and service providers.
We look forward to the DSpace and Fedora communities’ work and activities ahead
and welcome your feedback on how the DuraSpace organization can help promote
more collaboration in the future.
