The error you get when re-creating the indexes looks like something is
wrong with your database. If nobody else responds to your e-mail, you
may want to try re-running the command with -v (for verbose output) and
re-posting your question to the Technical List, along with the full
error message and any other output you get.

Yes, there is a direct connection. More importantly, changes to the
metadata field registry often mean that you have to make changes to your
dspace.cfg file as well -- most definitely if changes are made to fields
that are included in browse indices. The DSpace documentation has
detailed information about setting up browse indices:
