Dear DSpace Community,

I have submitted an article about faculty-imposed embargoes on both
undergraduate and graduate works that might be contributed into IRs.
The journal editors have asked me to determine if there are many existing
policies and practices about such embargoes on student works that can be
summarized and if a few interesting examples of such concerns could be
discussed.

THE ABSTRACT FOR THE ARTICLE

Within the academic sphere there are legitimate reasons why some
faculty-student collaboration efforts should not be documented and released
ASAP as open access materials placed in institutional repositories. The need
for the protection of ideas and processes prior to faculty publication can be
in direct conflict with the desire for institutional repositories to promote
the excellent efforts of students. This is certainly true in laboratory
situations in which details of experiments and research areas are guarded for
the lifetime of the exploration process. Such intentional delays can be
important when priority and intellectual property protection is a concern. The
implications of this situation can range from the removal of students from
sensitive collaborations (unless there is an agreed upon embargo period)
through the creation of entirely new distribution approaches which protect
sensitive details of research when students submit research documentation into
an Institutional Repos
itory (IR). Given the need for scientific laboratories to utilize student
workers, and the benefit of real research experiences for students, the academy
must find a balanced solution to this inherent conflict situation.

I am attempting to document Best Practices and create a summary of some
existing policies and procedures about:

(1) IRs dealing with faculty-imposed embargoes, and perhaps the versioning
of submissions as such embargoes are imposed and removed,

(2) how many IRs actively solicit and house Undergraduate work, and

(3) Interesting examples of faculty imposed embargo scenarios.

Any input anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

          David
