Hi Hilton,

We put in quite a bit of work into developing the Digital Preservation
Policy Framework at Ohio State. I'd like to thank my colleagues Tschera
Connell, and Dan Noonan for their great work on it too. It definitely helps
to have a number of prior work in the field to help guide us. We were
inspired to work on the policy after attending DigCCurr (Digital Curation
Curriculum) at UNC-Chapel Hill as a team, and then we had a 6-month
assignment to work on something.

My motivation, was that I brainstormed a list of improvements that I wanted
to make to the repository, to ensure that we're making good on our
commitment to our assets. (Do we have archivable materials, do we have
formats we can't read, are we confident that the file integrity checker is
working, do we have safe backups, can we recover deleted materials, do we
have an audit of changes over time)...

To help guide our thinking, we were charged with coming up with a digital
preservation policy framework, to get some guidance on our governance. What
is our purpose? Whats the scope of our mission? What are our guiding
principles (just university produced materials, or the wider region)? So,
we worked on the framework, consulted with Nancy McGovern (Curation /
Preservation at MIT), and presented our findings to DigCCurr, and to our
University Library administration.
