Hi David,

sorry if I'm missing something here because my use case doesn't
require me to use the submission workflow, but AFAIK, when you add an
item, it should be added to the index immediately (which happens
thanks to events which can be hooked and acted upon). Although I know
there are some things that will not be updated (e.g. XMLUI browse
pages), the item should be properly indexed and locatable after it is
added. Ideally, the manual index update would be only used in cases
where you manually write to the database directly and you need to
force an index update.

Furthermore, you didn't specify which DSpace version and interface
you're running and whether you have Discovery enabled - all being
important information.
