The question is why do you need load balancing? DSpace is composed of
several components that can be load balanced individually - which one
seems to be the bottleneck in your scenario? It makes sense to
load-balance that one.

A running DSpace instance assumes it has exclusive write access to the
assetstore. Are you thinking of doing some form of load-balancing on
the filesystem level?

See above. I don't think the DSpace webapps themselves are designed to
be load-balanced (I'm not saying it's not possible, I just don't see
an obvious way how). But the other components they depend on are
likely to be the bottlenecks and those can be load-balanced.
