curated
by Liz Bishoff, Partner, The Bishoff Group LLC.

Beginning in December 2013, the DuraSpace not-for-profit organization began
collaborating with The Bishoff Group in order to gain a better
understanding of the status of digital content creation, management, and
preservation activities underway in the non-ARL academic library community
as well as to determine how DuraSpace’s open source projects and services
could (better) meet the needs of this community. As part of the work,
DuraSpace commissioned The Bishoff Group to conduct a Managing Digital
Collections Survey of non-ARL academic libraries.

This web series, consisting of three, 1-hour webinars, will discuss the
findings from that survey, the trend toward adopting hosted services, and
how non-ARL organizations are actually implementing hosted services on
their campuses to provide access at the same time as preserve their digital
collections.

Doing It: Research Results on Non-ARL Academic Libraries Managing Digital
Collections

Thursday, October 2, 2014 at 11:00am-12:00pm ET

A 2014 survey conducted by The Bishoff group in collaboration with
DuraSpace of 145 non-ARL academic libraries found that these libraries have
made significant progress implementing institutional/digital repositories.
This survey builds on the results of the 2007 MIRACLE Project. Webinar
attendees will learn about:

●        most important benefits of IR/DR’s to non-ARL academic libraries;

●        trends in adoption of hosted services;

● important features for the future; and

● systems that the libraries are exploring.

Attendees will have the opportunity to join in the discussion of the survey
results and share their views on benefits of IR/DR to their campus, rank
future features, and indicate systems that they currently or may use in the
future to support preservation and access to their collections.

Doing It: Trends Toward Hosted Service Adoption and Implementation for
Managing Digital Collections

Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at 11:00am-12:00pm ET

The Managing Digital Collections survey of non-ARL academic libraries found
that the majority of these libraries had either implemented an
institutional/digital repository or were planning on implementing one in
the next several years. Further, the preferred technical strategy was to
use a hosted service. This webinar will review the reasons why hosted
services were selected and which hosted services are currently used.
Presenters will also explore opportunities for hosted digital preservation
strategies based on the needs identified in the survey.

Webinar participants will be able to contribute their viewpoints to add to
the survey results and share their rationale for selecting hosted services,
the local process of procurement and implementation, required
features/functionality, making the case for funding, etc.

Doing It: Real Life Experiences with Hosted Institutional /Digital
Repository Services

Thursday, January 22, 2015, 11:00am-12:00pm ET

The Managing Digital Collections survey identified a number of important
features of a hosted IR/DR service, along with barriers to adopting a
hosted service, and realizing the desired goals of long-term preservation
of digital content. During this webinar, users of hosted services will
share with you how they are able to address the goal of access and
long-term preservation through a hosted service. Specific topics of
discussion will include benefits of selecting a hosted service, the pros
and cons of the hosted service versus of the locally managed
implementation, and the process for how they got started, including the
all-important step of making the case and gaining management approval.

Attendees will have the opportunity to pose questions to the panel of
speakers regarding their experiences and observations as users of a hosted
service.
