Yes, you are now able to upgrade directly from 1.7.2 to 5.3 (with no
intermediate upgrades). However, you must be sure that you have the
prerequisite versions of Tomcat, Java and Postgres/Oracle installed
first. More info at:

The upgrade of you DSpace content (in the database) will happen
automatically.
Unfortunately, at the User Interface level, you may need to re-customize
your UI based on the latest 5.3 user interface. A User Interface from
1.7.2 will obviously NOT work for 5.3.
