Mariangels, It sounds like the format of your input-forms.xml may be incorrect.
It's also unlikely that the old 1.7.2 input-forms.xml will work in DSpace 5.3. I'd encourage you to start with the 5.3 input-forms.xml, and re-customize it based on what fields you need to add/update.
