Hi... A while ago, I wrote to the list about displaying a "restricted thumbnail" in the 5.x XMLUI MIrage2 theme. That is to say, currently in DSpace 5.x, if a bitstream is restricted, the thumbnail is not displayed, but the word "Thumbnail" appears or you might get a broken image depending on the browser you are using.
I remember that some people expressed an interest in this, and I finally figured out a way to display a "Restricted" image thumbnail instead of the broken image that is displayed by default for unauthorized users. I don't know if it's worthy of being officially part of the source code, but if you are interested, let me know and I can send you the details on the change that I made.
