I think it's a legitimate request to be able to connect a derived
bitstream (thumbnail or text) with original bistream. We don't have a
facility for that yet. I don't think it's the use case for a primary
bistream, as there can be several derived bitstreams per item. The
concept of primary bitstream is missing a clear definition - as it is
now it can have different meanings in different contexts, so in my
opinion it would be better to replace it with particular concepts,
like "this thumbnail represents this item" or "this PDF contains the
fulltext for Google Scholar". Those can now (since DSpace 5) be easily
represented as bitstream metadata.
