Hi,

I've been using Java 7 for a few years and am now evaluating Java 8
and some other new bits for my DSpace infrastructure stack, and I was
pleased to find news that Java 8 is recommended for Solr 4.x and 5.x.
Read more on this Solr developer's page on the Solr wiki:

On a related note, Java 7 introduced a new garbage collector called
G1GC and everyone in the Java community was excited because it was
more performant, had shorter pauses, etc. Initially I was using it
with DSpace, but I came across this very stern warning on the Lucene
wiki stating "Do not, under any circumstances, run Lucene with the G1
garbage collector", so I switched back to CMS. The warning still
stands, you can read about it here (for what it's worth, Shawn's page
above says he uses G1GC with Solr):

Anyways, I just wanted to pass on the word about these developments so
people can discuss here, share their experiences, and update their
stacks.

Ciao,
