Yeah, you could do something like that as long as you set the right permissions for DSpace's installation folder. The rule is that Tomcat always has to able to write on DSpace installation folder. So, for instance, If you give permission for dspace group tô write on it and add Tomcat to dspace group, you may be good to go. However you may have to set permission masks to the cases when Tomcat create a file and then it will own it, and not DSpace. Also, there may securitity issues that you have to analyse carefully. But yeah, there are tons of solutions for this problem.
