This might help.  We originally thought crawlers, but the weird thing is
that the problem is also appearing on our test server which is fire-walled
from the outside world and only available to on-campus IPs.  So, everything
was fine for a long time, and then this past weekend everything kind of
went haywire (no code or config changes).  I'm starting to lean toward our
central IT group that manages our servers may have done infrastructure
changes without telling us, but right now, I'm just grasping at straws.

In any case, thanks for letting me know about the "valves".  I didn't know
anything about them.
