As for the recent submission display see https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/blob/dspace-5.2/dspace/config/dspace.cfg#L1313 adjust recent.submission.count = 0 to the number you want to display. The instructions are a bit misleading there, we had to set it regardless of the discovery settings, maybe it's just a discrepance between jspui and xmlui.
