Figured out my issue...will post the answer here (in case someone else is a careless as me :)
I didn't uncomment a couple of important areas of as-distributred dspace.cfg (specifically those lines related to ORCID and ORCID authority control). We added ORCID functionality to our dspace instance during 2016...
