Thanks, Mark. Long term that's a good idea. Claudia, before I sent the message to the mailing list I had a quick go at editing the requiredmetadata task to make it always return successfully, but failed. I haven't read/written java in fifteen years so all the try catch catch throw stuff is really nonsense to me. :)
