You're correct: it's not possible to search for a wildcard metadata
language with the current DSpace 4.x, 5.x, 6.x REST API. If I recall
correctly helix84 was running a nightly cron job or curation task to
standardize the lang column of his metadatavalues in the database to null
or "en_US" etc (can't find the thread now, though). This is problematic if
you actually have metadatavalues that are in other languages, though! For
us it's probably just a few dozen metadatavalues out of 60,000 items, so I
would consider it a low priority.
