Hello,

1. Installing DSpace as a 'directory'
Yes, it is possible to install DSpace and access it using the desired
context path; we recently set up a subject repository that is accessible
via a context path [1]. If you do decide to use this strategy, you want to
ensure that access to the other webapps is configured appropriately; for
instance, you would probably need to configure the OAI-PMH data provider so
it is accessible using a context path. In our case, we use the convention
archive-[webapp name] for the other apps: e.g. OAI-PMH data provider is
accessing using the context path archive-oai [2].

To do this, you will need to do the following:
* Configure DSpace to run on port 80.
* There is a lot written about how to redirect traffic to port 80 [3]: we
have found Method 3 effective [3].

2. Is it best practice to install on a subdomain
* This seems to be the most popular approach [4]. Repository installations
use the subdomain approach, with the repository instance installation
accessible a level above the institution domain.
* However, it depends on your institutional policy: for instance, I worked
with an institution that NEEDED the repository to be installed as part of
the library subdomain (dspace.libray.institution.ac.za). We got to find out
later that the institution had a policy that ONLY allowed a four-level
nested hierarchy---installing DSpace as a subdomain using the library
subdomain would have meant implementing a four-level hierarchy.

I hope this helps.
