For our installation, we create the following symlinks - /opt/tomcat8/webapps/xmlui -> dspace-install/webapps/xmlui - /opt/tomcat8/webapps/ROOT -> xmlui
If you cannot find an error in one of the dspace logs, did you also check the catalina log file for tomcat?
