Hi:

It turned out that adding the language switcher to every page was the
cause of the problem. Claudia's stock I18N patch, with a little tweak
to omit the currently viewed language from the list of available
languages, works perfectly.

Thanks for getting back to me. I should probably dump this "lesson
learned" into the I18N section of the wiki in case others lag even
further behind me in this area.
