It isn't the case that you have to convert anything to DC if you don't want to. All you will have to do is load in your schema into the metadata registry, and then write an importer that knows how to deal with it. DSpace isn't by any means bound to DC, it's just that if you want it to deal with another format, you'll have to "teach" it how. As for the packager stuff being convoluted, I would tend to agree, though it is a very powerful system. If you will need to do this kind of ingest operation frequently, it might be a good idea to use that to accomplish what you need. If this is a one-off import, you may find it easier to just write a custom importer that basically mirrors the functionality of the current ItemImport class but that understands your schema rather than DC.
