Hey all,
We are in the midst of discussing/deciding the future of our Digital
Library.

Our options include:
1) implementing and migrating to a newer version of DSpace(currently 1.32)
     - Pretty simple but perhaps restrictive
2) implementing a Fedora back-end and creating a customized interface
for application interoperability
     - more complicated, less restrictive
3) implementing a "from the ground up" functionality through a CMS like
Drupal.
     - More complicated yet with obvious advantages if doable

We are hoping to provide functionality like; auto community posting and
meta data harvesting, RSS feeds, on-the fly document conversion etc...

See http://loomware.typepad.com/loomware/2007/01/fedora_a_better.html

Who has experience adding functionality, interface customization and
interoperability with other systems to DSpace ?
What kind of skills might be needed? How simple/difficult are these kind
of things?

I know DSpace is CSS compliant and have mucked about to create a
functional space.
I am aware that DSpace runs on Postgres - Where can I find the "table
structures" documentation?
Would it be possible to start a submission process from "outside" the
DSpace interface, by passing credentials and required pieces?

Thank in advance for any comments you can make.

Cheers
