Dear DSpace users,
The DSpace Architecture Review Group released its report on recommendations
for the next generation of DSpace at last week's Open Repositories 2007
conference in San Antonio, Texas. You can read the report, download the
slides of the OR2007 presentation on the report, and see supporting notes

The report and the presentation are now available in PDF as well as their
original MS-Office formats.
On behalf of the DSpace Architecture Review Group, I'd like to thank everyone
who participated in and supported the planning process, including everyone who
answered the open source community survey in the fall, and who participated in
the various online and offline discussions.
The report outlines a roadmap for building "DSpace 2" with an enhanced
data model, built-in support for next-generation user interfaces such
as Manakin, support for extended content life cycles, and other
improvements designed to improve DSpace's functionality and adaptability.
There is still much work to be done before this plan can be realized.
Unresolved issues include who will do the detailed design and reimplementation,
and how the community will support this work. Also, the group recommended
that DSpace adopt third-party open source systems to handle extension
integration and workflow, and proposed some promising candidates for
these functions, but left open the precise choice of system in these areas.
I am confident, though, that the DSpace community can see the project
through. So much of what I saw in San Antonio gave confirmation to the
ingenuity, dedication, diversity, and cooperative spirit of the members
of the DSpace community, not just those in the "official" DSpace committees
but all those who work with DSpace and share their questions, experiences,
ideas, instruction, and code. I look forward to seeing how the next generation
develops.
