I would recommend the snapshot of the database as 
the technique to use.  Using the
pgdump and restore is messy at best. I have yet 
to get that to work in test, whatsoever,
and the Postgres documentation is of no help.

The secondary route is to perform an "export" of 
all of your dspace content, if you have
that kind of room.  Then you don't need to 
necessarily worry about Postgres versioning
or the messy pg_dump and restore routines.
