We have loaded several thousand images that are quite large.  We 
loaded yearbooks
that were PDF files that are 1-6 GB in size.  When they are really 
large like our
yearbooks, we have found that importing them via the backend works 
like a charm.

Depending on the memory allocation issue, you may find some materials 
should be
batchloaded, but your photos that are between 0K and 150MB shouldn't 
be a problem
at all using the usual Ingest mode.
