I think that 8.2 is most recent, but Gentoo ebuilds above 8.0 are
masked, so I'm using 8.0.8 in production and 8.0.13 in testing.  I'm
using the 8.1-404 JDBC driver all around.

If you go with 8.1 or 8.2, be aware that there were a few terminology
changes after 8.0 that can bite you.  "Users" and "groups" became
"roles", and this is reflected in the wording of commands used to
manipulate them.  You probably want to dump the old database using the
tools from the new version (as the PG documentation recommends) to
keep this straight.  I upgraded to 8.1 another instance of PG not used
for DSpace, I didn't follow the advice as to version of pg_dumpall,
and the resulting script didn't run cleanly until I'd edited it a bit
-- fortunately that instance is just a toy and had only a handful of
tables and roles.
