Hi Grant,

This is all a work-in-progress at the moment so there's not a lot of
code that's stable enough to share at the moment. I think you've already
been in touch with Christiaan who mentioned the submission service we're
looking at under APSR. The focus of the current work is this service
(webapp) so although we've been passing objects between DSpace and
Fedora the code that does the METS transforms and DSpace
ingestion/dissemination is highly unstable and has really been used to
work out requirements. It was hacked up to show how this could work in
the context of a service providing rudimentary routing from an authoring
app/system to a repository, be it DSpace, Fedora,ePrints, or something
else (see http://pilot.apsr.edu.au/wiki/index.php/Main_Page for more
context on the APSR work).

So although I don't have anything that's really useful you can install
at the moment, once the project is complete we do intend releasing the
code for anyone to use (and we expect to use it in production here and
with APSR partners). However we still need to finalise METS profiles and
create stable METS ingest/dissemination classes and transforms for the
various METS profiles we will be developing.

Having said that, what you propose is possible, but you'll find it
easier to upgrade to DSpace 1.4.x (since that has the packager plugins).
For example you could export your materials as DSpace METS packages and
then write a transform (XSL or Java) to go from DSpace METS to Fedora
METS and then just ingest them from the Fedora Admin app. For our demos
we were using an early version of a Journal METS profile and also a
"fake" profile for images, so none of the transforms or DSpace classes
would be runnable off-the-shelf for you but I can provide them off-line
to you if you'll think they'll be of any use.

You should also check out the work that Stuart Lewis has done
(http://www.inf.aber.ac.uk/bridge/) as that may give you immediate help.

Scott.

===============================================
Scott,
In perusing the Fez wiki I noticed that you have had some success in
importing a Dspace METS object.

I have tried to figure out the settings to batch import a Dspace
exported collection with the METS folder structure into Fez. That
structure, as you probably know, is comprised of folders named with the
dspace "handle" and each folder containing the object bitstream (.pdf in
my case) and the METS XML file.

Do you have any advice as to whether this is doable? and if so a
direction for me?
We are using the latest Fez trunk build and I noticed that it will parse
folders now.
Am I doing something wrong or is Fez just not ready.

Thanks
