OK I've fixed it. I had to find the javamail package, install it, and
then uninstall the classpathx-mail package. For some reason my system
had installed the (apparently incompatible) GNU package rather than the
Sun javamail.

Subject: [Dspace-tech] Javamail Classpath Problem

DSpace 1.4.2
RHEL4
Tomcat 5.5
java-1.5.0-sun

The feedback form generates this error:

SEVERE: Servlet.service() for servlet feedback threw exception
java.lang.ClassCastException: gnu.mail.handler.TextPlain
        at
javax.activation.MailcapCommandMap.getDataContentHandler(MailcapCommandM
ap.java:596)
        at
javax.activation.MailcapCommandMap.createDataContentHandler(MailcapComma
ndMap.java:550)

<snip>

If I remove the classpathx-mail package (again, RHEL4), then the
feedback form works just fine (i.e. DSpace uses it's internal routines
instead). But there are several other packages which depend on
classpathx-mail, and I get errors when starting Tomcat, for example,
when the package has been forcefully removed.

Can someone tell me how/where to set the classpath so DSpace uses it's
own mail class?
