Scott and John, I'll also point out that the planned changes for DSpace 1.6 abstract out Handles from the core DSpace implementation, allowing external identifier systems to be used with DSpace. I think this will need to include examples of how to use the Handle system externally as well. Ideally, there will be detailed documentation on how to migrate from the internal system to an external solution for existing DSpace instances.
I wouldn't necessarily look at this example as outdated, the solution would add the capability to register you DSpace generated handles in an externally configured handle service. The code would possibly be reviewed and considered for dspace 1.6 as a rudimentary addon for interacting with standalone handle services. If you do wish to use it we can Scott, Will PILIN be open source? Will it support a webservice, REST or other interface for interacting with its services?
